Home › Nutrition Calculators › Daily Protein Target Calculator
Estimate a daily protein amount by multiplying body weight in kilograms by a selected grams-per-kilogram planning factor. The tool is a transparent arithmetic aid: the selected factor is an input, not a personalized clinical recommendation. Protein needs vary with age, activity, health status, pregnancy, recovery and other circumstances.
Daily protein target calculator
Results are estimates based on the values you enter. Nothing you type is sent to or stored on our servers.
Calculation model
Estimated protein target (g/day) = body weight (kg) × selected factor (g/kg/day). The available factors are 0.8, 1.0, 1.2, 1.4, 1.6 and 2.0 g/kg. The calculator requires a positive body weight and a positive factor, then reports the product and the arithmetic used.
Verified numerical example
For a body weight of 70 kg and a selected planning factor of 1.2 g/kg/day, the calculation is 70 × 1.2 = 84 g/day. If the factor is changed to 0.8 g/kg/day, the arithmetic result is 56 g/day. The tool does not determine which factor is appropriate for the person.
How to use the calculator
- Enter body weight in kilograms. Convert pounds to kilograms before entering the value.
- Choose the planning factor that you want to examine.
- Calculate and review the estimated grams per day and the factor shown in the result.
- Treat the output as a planning estimate, not a prescription or a required intake target.
Interpretation and health limitations
A grams-per-kilogram calculation is only as appropriate as its selected factor and body-weight basis. Total body weight may not be the most suitable basis for every person or clinical situation. The calculator does not account for body composition, energy intake, protein quality, distribution across meals, kidney or liver conditions, pregnancy, age-related needs or medical treatment.
The 0.8 g/kg option is labeled as a general adult reference in the interface, but it should not be interpreted as a universal target for every individual. People with medical conditions or prescribed diets should discuss protein intake with a qualified clinician or registered dietitian. This tool does not diagnose, prevent or treat disease.
Frequently asked questions
Does the result tell me exactly how much protein I need?
No. It multiplies your entered weight by a selected factor. It cannot assess individual health or nutritional needs.
Can I enter pounds?
The calculator expects kilograms. Convert pounds to kilograms first; 1 lb is approximately 0.45359237 kg.
Does it divide protein across meals?
No. It estimates a daily total only. Meal distribution is not calculated.
