Meal Planning Tools

Meal planning tools can make it easier to organize recipes, portions, ingredients and grocery spending. Start with the meals you actually plan to prepare, then build a shopping list from the quantities those recipes require.

Scale a recipe carefully

To scale a recipe, divide the desired number of servings by the original number of servings. Multiply each ingredient quantity by that factor. Seasonings, thickening agents, cooking times and pan sizes may not scale perfectly, so adjust them based on the recipe and cooking method.

Build a practical grocery budget

Estimate the cost of the quantities you will use rather than assigning the entire package price to one meal. Consider pantry ingredients already on hand, package sizes, expected leftovers and likely food waste.

Meal preparation and storage

Plan preparation order around cooking time, cooling and safe storage. Refrigerate perishable food promptly, use shallow containers where appropriate and follow reliable food-safety guidance for storage times and reheating.

Avoid overplanning

Choose a manageable number of meals, reuse ingredients where it makes sense and leave room for schedule changes. A plan is useful when it reflects household preferences, available time and realistic portions.
