Food Cost Calculators

Food cost calculators help home cooks, caterers and food businesses estimate what a recipe or portion costs. A useful estimate starts with the amount of each ingredient actually used, not simply the price of the full package.

Cost per ingredient

Ingredient cost used = package price × (quantity used ÷ quantity in package). Keep the package and recipe quantities in the same unit before calculating. For example, convert kilograms to grams or liters to milliliters when needed.

Cost per serving

Recipe cost per serving = total ingredient cost ÷ number of servings. This is an ingredient-cost estimate. It does not automatically include labor, rent, utilities, packaging, delivery, payment fees, waste, tax or other operating expenses.

Food cost percentage

Food cost percentage = ingredient cost per portion ÷ selling price per portion × 100. Use a selling price that is defined consistently and decide whether taxes are included. A target percentage is a business decision, not a universal rule.

Plan for real-world variation

Purchase prices change, ingredients have trim and cooking losses, and portion sizes may vary. Record actual usable quantities and update costs when supplier prices change. Add a waste allowance only when it is based on your own records.
