Convert teaspoons into milliliters while choosing between the US customary teaspoon and the 5 mL metric teaspoon. This distinction is small for one spoon but can become noticeable when scaling a recipe or preparing several batches.

Conversion formula and standards
The conversion is multiplication: milliliters = teaspoons × milliliters per teaspoon. The US teaspoon used here is 4.92892 mL; the metric teaspoon is 5 mL. The tool keeps these standards separate rather than silently treating them as identical.
For a US teaspoon, 1 tablespoon equals 3 teaspoons and is about 14.7868 mL. For the metric convention, 3 teaspoons equal 15 mL. NIST lists the US customary teaspoon at approximately 4.93 mL and the tablespoon at approximately 14.79 mL.
Worked examples
If a recipe calls for 3 US teaspoons, the volume is about 14.79 mL. With the metric setting, the same three teaspoons equal 15 mL. For 6 teaspoons, the results are about 29.57 mL and 30 mL respectively.
For a small quantity such as 1/2 teaspoon, the difference is only about 0.036 mL. For 30 teaspoons, however, the difference reaches about 2.13 mL. Choose one standard and use it consistently throughout a recipe.
How to use the converter
- Enter the number of teaspoons. Decimal quantities such as 0.5 or 1.25 are accepted.
- Select US teaspoon for a US customary recipe or metric teaspoon when the recipe specifies 5 mL spoons.
- Calculate and read the milliliter result. Divide milliliters by 1,000 if you need liters.
Volume is not mass
A teaspoon is a volume measure, not a weight. Five milliliters of water weighs close to five grams, but five milliliters of flour, oil, honey or salt will not have the same mass. Ingredient density, packing and crystal size affect the weight. If the recipe gives grams, use a scale or an ingredient-specific converter rather than assuming milliliters equal grams.
Accuracy and practical use
The conversion factors are fixed standards, but real kitchen spoons may not be calibrated measuring spoons. A cutlery teaspoon can hold a different volume. For repeatable baking, use a proper measuring set or measure by mass. For medicine, follow the dosing device and instructions supplied with the product; do not use an ordinary kitchen spoon.
Frequently asked questions
Is a teaspoon always 5 mL?
Not in every measurement system. The metric teaspoon is 5 mL; the US customary teaspoon is about 4.92892 mL.
How many teaspoons are in a tablespoon?
Three US teaspoons make one US tablespoon. The corresponding volume is about 14.7868 mL.
Can I convert teaspoons directly to grams?
Not without knowing the ingredient. Grams measure mass, while teaspoons measure volume. Use a density value specific to the ingredient.
