Convert a butter quantity from common US kitchen measures into grams, ounces, sticks, cups and tablespoons. Select the input unit before calculating. This tool uses nominal US butter-measure equivalents; package sizes and measuring practices can vary, so weighing butter is the more reproducible method.

Results are estimates based on the values you enter. Nothing you type is sent to or stored on our servers.

Calculation method

The calculator first converts the entered amount into grams using the selected unit factor, then derives the other displayed measures from that mass. The factors in the engine are 113.4 g per US stick, 226.8 g per US cup, 14.175 g per US tablespoon, 4.725 g per US teaspoon, 1 g per gram and 28.3495 g per avoirdupois ounce.

In symbols, butter mass (g) = entered amount × selected grams-per-unit factor. The displayed ounces are grams ÷ 28.3495; sticks are grams ÷ 113.4; cups are grams ÷ 226.8; and tablespoons are grams ÷ 14.175.

Verified numerical example

For 2 US sticks, the mass is 2 × 113.4 = 226.8 g. The calculator then reports approximately 8.00 oz, 2.00 sticks, 1.00 US cup and 16.0 tablespoons. This cross-check is consistent with the common US kitchen relationship of 1 stick = 8 tablespoons = 1/2 cup.

For 4 tablespoons, the mass is 4 × 14.175 = 56.7 g, which is half a standard 113.4 g stick. The calculator’s output is therefore approximately 56.7 g, 2.00 oz, 0.50 stick and 0.25 cup.

How to use the converter

  1. Enter the amount as a number, such as 1.5 or 2.
  2. Choose the matching input unit: US sticks, US cups, US tablespoons, grams or ounces.
  3. Calculate and use the gram result when a recipe requires a mass measurement. Check the package label if the butter is sold in a non-US format.

Important measurement distinctions

This tool is specific to butter and its stated customary factors. Do not apply the same cup-to-gram relationship to flour, sugar, oil or other ingredients. A cup is volume, while a gram is mass; the conversion depends on the ingredient and its density. Butter is also not always packaged in US sticks outside the United States.

The engine uses rounded nominal factors for sticks, cups, tablespoons and teaspoons. The values are useful for recipe conversion but should not be treated as a laboratory calibration or a universal packaging standard. For precise baking, use a digital scale and the mass stated on the package.

Frequently asked questions

How many grams are in one US stick of butter?

The calculator uses 113.4 g per stick, approximately 4 ounces.

How many tablespoons are in one stick?

The customary relationship used here is 8 tablespoons per stick, or 16 tablespoons per US cup.

Can I use this for margarine or oil?

Not reliably. Different products have different densities and packaging conventions. Use a product-specific weight or weigh the ingredient.
