Food Cost Per Serving Calculator

Home › Food Business Calculators › Food Cost Per Serving Calculator

Estimate the direct cost of one recipe serving from the total ingredient cost, number of servings and any additional batch costs you enter. This is useful for comparing recipes, planning meal-prep prices and building a consistent cost baseline. The calculator keeps the currency as entered; it does not convert currencies.

Food cost per serving calculator

Results are estimates based on the values you enter. Nothing you type is sent to or stored on our servers.

Calculation model

The engine adds the total ingredient cost to the optional extra-cost amount, then divides by the number of servings: cost per serving = (ingredient cost + extra costs) ÷ servings. Extra costs can represent packaging, fuel or other batch-level expenses. If no extra cost is entered, the calculator treats it as zero.

This model allocates the entered batch costs evenly across servings. It does not infer labor, rent, utilities, spoilage, tax, payment fees or delivery costs. Add only costs that belong in this calculation, and avoid counting an expense twice.

Verified numerical example

Suppose a recipe uses 48.00 in ingredients, makes 6 servings and has 6.00 in extra batch costs. Total entered cost = 48 + 6 = 54.00. Cost per serving = 54 ÷ 6 = 9.00. The calculator reports 9.00 per serving and a total recipe cost of 54.00.

If the extra-cost field is left blank, the same recipe costs 48 ÷ 6 = 8.00 per serving. This comparison shows how packaging or fuel allocations change the serving cost.

How to use the calculator

  1. Enter the combined ingredient cost for the full recipe in your chosen currency.
  2. Enter the number of servings produced. It must be greater than zero.
  3. Optionally enter additional batch costs, such as packaging or fuel. Leave the field blank if none apply.
  4. Calculate and check both the per-serving result and the total cost before using it in a selling-price decision.

Cost basis and limitations

The result is a cost allocation, not a recommended menu price. A business may also need to account for labor, rent, equipment, insurance, waste, taxes, delivery commissions and other operating expenses. Those costs should be modeled separately or included transparently in the input where appropriate.

The calculation assumes equal cost allocation across servings. If portions differ substantially in size or expensive ingredients are distributed unevenly, a per-portion cost based on weighed ingredient allocation may be more accurate. Enter all monetary values in the same currency and period basis.

Frequently asked questions

Does this include labor and overhead?

Only if you include those amounts in the optional extra-cost field. The tool does not estimate them automatically.

Can I use dollars, pounds or rupees?

Yes. The calculator does not assign a currency symbol or exchange rate. Use one currency consistently for all cost inputs.

Is cost per serving the same as selling price?

No. It is a cost estimate. Selling price must also consider target margin, overhead, market conditions and applicable taxes.
