Grocery Budget Calculator

Home › Food Business Calculators › Grocery Budget Calculator

Estimate a weekly grocery budget from household size, meals per person per day, planning days and average cost per serving. The calculator converts the meal plan into a serving count and multiplies by the cost input. It is a planning model, not a prediction of local grocery prices.

Mathematical model

Planned servings = people × meals per person per day × days per week. Weekly budget = planned servings × average cost per serving. The calculator also annualizes the weekly result using 52 weeks per year and estimates an average month as 52 ÷ 12 weeks.

The model assumes that each planned meal has the same average serving cost. It does not distinguish breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, children versus adults, food preferences, special diets or price changes. Use a weighted average serving cost if meal types differ.

Verified numerical example

For 2 people eating 3 meals per day over 7 days, planned servings = 2 × 3 × 7 = 42. At an average cost of 4.50 per serving, the weekly budget is 42 × 4.50 = 189.00. The annualized estimate is 189 × 52 = 9,828.00, and the average monthly estimate is 9,828 ÷ 12 = 819.00.

These monthly and annual figures are projections from a constant weekly rate. They are not separate forecasts of seasonal spending or actual shopping bills.

How to use the calculator

  1. Enter the number of people covered by the grocery plan.
  2. Enter meals per person per day. Use a consistent definition of what counts as a meal.
  3. Enter the number of days to plan, usually 7 for a weekly estimate.
  4. Enter the average cost per serving in your currency and calculate the period budget.

Planning assumptions and limitations

A household may buy ingredients in packages, use leftovers across several meals or eat some meals away from home. The simple serving model does not account for package sizes, pantry stock, food waste, discounts or bulk purchasing. For a more realistic plan, estimate average cost from recent receipts and adjust for meals not prepared at home.

The calculator does not compare prices or recommend a nutritionally adequate meal plan. Keep all monetary inputs in one currency. If the average serving cost is based on a different household size or meal pattern, update it before relying on the result.

Frequently asked questions

Does the calculator include snacks?

Only if you include snacks in the meals-per-person-per-day count and in the average cost per serving.

Why is the monthly estimate not exactly four weekly budgets?

An average month is longer than four weeks. The calculator uses 52 weeks divided by 12 months, or about 4.333 weeks per month.

Can I use it for a family of different ages?

Yes, but one average cost per serving may hide differences in portion sizes and food choices. A weighted average based on your actual meal plan is more accurate.
