Estimate how much food to prepare for packed lunches across a school or work week. The Lunchbox Portion Calculator combines the number of lunchboxes prepared each day, the number of days and the food mass per lunchbox. It converts common weight units and can add an allowance, package estimate and optional cost.
Use it with the Meal Prep Container Calculator to plan storage, or the Weekly Meal Prep Quantity Calculator for broader batch planning.
Results are estimates based on the values you enter. Nothing you type is sent to or stored on our servers.
What This Lunchbox Calculator Estimates
The calculator estimates total cooked food mass from the number of lunchboxes and a per-lunchbox portion weight. An optional percentage allowance increases the target. Package size and price per kilogram can turn the target into a simple shopping estimate.
- Total lunchboxes across the selected days.
- Base cooked food mass and allowance-adjusted target.
- Optional package count and excess mass.
- Optional estimated purchase cost in the selected currency.
How to Use the Calculator
Set lunchboxes per day and days
Enter the number of lunchboxes you expect to prepare each day. This may be children, adults or a combined count. Enter the number of school or work days included in the batch. For a Monday-to-Friday plan, use five days.
Choose the cooked portion mass
Enter the food mass intended for one lunchbox and select grams, kilograms, ounces or pounds. Use the same basis for all lunchboxes in the estimate. If different people need different portion sizes, calculate each group separately and add the totals.
Add a preparation allowance
The allowance is a percentage added to the base food mass. It can account for small serving variations or a planned spare amount. It is not a substitute for accurately measuring portions and should not be used to compensate for uncertain food-safety handling.
Estimate packages and cost
If package size is supplied, enter it in grams. The calculator rounds the purchase count upward to whole packages. If you also enter a price per kilogram, the tool estimates cost using the rounded package mass when a package size is given, or the unrounded target otherwise.
Formula and Calculation Method
Let L be lunchboxes prepared per day, D the number of days, W the cooked portion mass in grams after unit conversion, and A the allowance percentage.
1. Lunchbox count
Total lunchboxes = L × D. This is the number of individual packed portions in the plan.
2. Base and adjusted food mass
Base mass = L × D × W. Adjusted target = base mass × (1 + A/100). The allowance is applied once to the total mass.
3. Package and cost estimates
Packages required = ceiling(adjusted target ÷ package size). Purchase mass = packages × package size. Estimated cost = purchase mass in kilograms × price per kilogram when package size is supplied.
Worked Example: Three Lunchboxes for Five Days
Suppose three lunchboxes are prepared per day for five days, with 300 g of cooked food per lunchbox and a 10% allowance. The plan contains 3 × 5 = 15 lunchboxes. Base mass is 15 × 300 = 4,500 g. The allowance adds 450 g, giving a target of 4,950 g, or 4.95 kg.
If food is purchased in 1 kg packages, five packages are required, providing 5 kg. The estimated excess is 50 g. At $8 per kilogram, the package-based cost estimate is $40.
Understanding the Results
- Lunchbox count is the number of individual packed servings.
- Base mass excludes the allowance; total target includes it.
- Package rounding may create a small remainder.
- Cost is based on the chosen purchase basis and entered price, not a live store quote.
Practical Planning, Allergens and Food Safety
A single average portion weight may not suit every lunchbox. Consider appetite, age, activity, food type and any household requirements when deciding what to pack. This calculator does not provide a nutrition prescription or determine appropriate calories, protein or other nutrient targets.
Packed lunches may contain foods with different temperature-control needs. Use clean, food-safe containers and suitable insulated bags or cold packs where required. Follow local guidance for safe preparation, transport, refrigeration and allergen separation. Do not assume that a quantity estimate confirms safe storage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I calculate lunches for both children and adults?
Yes. If the groups use different portion weights, calculate them separately and add the total food masses. A single average is appropriate only when portion sizes are similar.
What if I prepare lunchboxes on fewer days than the work week?
Enter only the days covered by the batch. For example, a three-day preparation run should use three days even if the normal work week is five days.
Does the allowance increase every lunchbox separately?
Mathematically, applying the percentage to the total is equivalent to applying the same percentage to each equal portion and summing the results.
Can I use ounces or pounds?
Yes. Select the appropriate weight unit. The calculator converts the portion mass to grams internally and reports the total in grams and kilograms.
