Recipe Serving Size Calculator

Home › Cooking Converters › Recipe Serving Size Calculator

Calculate the weight of one recipe serving or estimate how many portions can be made from a finished batch. Enter the cooked or finished recipe weight and choose grams or kilograms. You can then divide by a known number of servings or specify a target portion weight in grams.

Recipe serving size calculator

Results are estimates based on the values you enter. Nothing you type is sent to or stored on our servers.

Mathematical model

The calculator converts the entered total mass to grams using the selected unit factor. If a serving count is supplied, serving mass = total mass (g) ÷ number of servings. If no serving count is supplied but a target portion is entered, theoretical servings = total mass (g) ÷ target portion mass (g); full portions = floor(theoretical servings), and leftover mass = total mass − full portions × target portion mass.

When both optional inputs are filled, the engine uses the serving-count calculation first. To calculate the number of portions from a target portion size, leave the serving-count field blank.

Verified numerical examples

Example 1: a finished recipe weighs 2.4 kg and is divided into 8 servings. The calculator converts 2.4 kg to 2,400 g, then calculates 2,400 ÷ 8 = 300 g per serving. It also expresses the result as approximately 10.6 oz.

Example 2: the same 2,400 g batch is portioned into 180 g servings. The theoretical yield is 2,400 ÷ 180 = 13.333 portions. The tool reports about 13.3 portions, 13 full portions and approximately 60 g remaining.

How to use the calculator

  1. Enter the total weight of the finished recipe, not the raw ingredient total unless you intend to portion it before cooking.
  2. Select grams or kilograms. The engine converts the entered mass to grams internally.
  3. For known servings, enter the serving count and leave target portion blank. For a target portion size, leave serving count blank and enter the portion weight in grams.

Measurement basis and limitations

Use a consistent mass basis. Cooking can change food mass through water absorption, evaporation, draining, trimming and discarded cooking liquid. For meal prep, weigh the finished edible batch after cooking and before dividing it into containers. Do not divide raw recipe mass by a cooked serving count unless that is the intended method.

The calculator does not assess nutritional adequacy or recommend a portion size. A mathematically equal portion is not necessarily an appropriate portion for every person or meal. It also assumes the batch can be divided evenly; practical packaging and irregular pieces can create small differences.

Frequently asked questions

Does the calculator use cooked or raw weight?

It uses whichever total mass you enter. For ready-to-eat servings, enter the finished cooked weight so the output matches the food being portioned.

Can I enter kilograms?

Yes. The tool converts kilograms to grams before dividing.

Why is there leftover food?

When you specify a target portion size, the calculator reports whole portions and the remaining mass that is insufficient for another full portion.
