Home › Food Business Calculators › Meal Prep Cost Calculator
Estimate the total cost and average cost per prepared meal from ingredients, container costs and additional batch expenses. This calculator is useful for meal-prep budgeting and comparing batch sizes. It keeps the currency you enter and does not add any hidden fees or inferred expenses.

Results are estimates based on the values you enter. Nothing you type is sent to or stored on our servers.
Calculation method
Let I be total ingredient cost, N the number of meals, B the cost of one container per meal and O other batch costs. Total batch cost = I + (B × N) + O. Cost per meal = total batch cost ÷ N. If container cost or other costs are left blank, the calculator treats them as zero.
Container cost is multiplied by the number of meals because the field represents the cost per container, not the total container purchase. Enter additional batch costs once in the other-cost field to avoid multiplying them twice.
Verified numerical example
Suppose ingredients cost 48.00 for 10 meals, each container costs 0.50, and labels or energy add 3.00 to the batch. Container total = 0.50 × 10 = 5.00. Total batch cost = 48 + 5 + 3 = 56.00. Cost per meal = 56 ÷ 10 = 5.60.
If the container cost is entered as 5.00 instead of 0.50, the calculator interprets it as 5.00 per meal and multiplies it by 10. Check the field label before entering a total container invoice.
How to use the calculator
- Enter the total ingredient cost for the complete batch.
- Enter the number of meals or portions prepared; it must be greater than zero.
- Optionally enter the cost of one container per meal.
- Optionally enter other batch expenses, such as labels, energy or delivery, as one total amount.
- Calculate and inspect the total batch cost and cost per meal.
Cost allocation and limitations
The model allocates all entered costs evenly across meals. If meals have different ingredients, container sizes or portion weights, a single average may hide meaningful differences. Calculate each meal type separately or allocate costs by measured ingredient use when accuracy matters.
Labor, equipment depreciation, rent, spoilage, delivery platform commissions and taxes are not included unless you add them to the appropriate input. The calculator does not judge whether a meal-prep price is profitable; use a margin or target-price model after assembling a complete cost basis.
Frequently asked questions
Does container cost mean the total package price?
No. It means cost per container. If a pack of 20 containers costs 10.00, enter 0.50 per container for a 20-meal batch.
Can other costs be left blank?
Yes. Blank optional inputs are treated as zero.
Does cost per meal include labor?
Only if labor is included in the other-cost total. It is not calculated automatically.
